چکیده

The presence of filamentous appendages distinct from flagella was first discovered in electron microscope preparations by Anderson (1949) and Houwink and van Iterson (1950). Duguid, Smith, Dempster, and Edmunds (1955) confirmed the existence of these structures and suggested the name 'fimbriae' for them; others have called them 'cilia' (Pershina and Vasilieva, 1960) and 'pili' (Brinton, 1959). Because of the points Duguid and Anderson (1967) put forward in favour of the term 'fimbriae' it is perhaps the more correct form. Bacterial fimbriae are described as filamentous surface appendages having various diameters and lengths. They do not exhibit the sinuous forms characteristic of bacterial flagella, are devoid of any recognizable amplitude or wavelength, and are apparently not related to the motility of flagellated bacteria (Brinton, 1965; Duguid, Anderson, and Campbell, 1966); they can also be found in capsulated organisms, e.g. Klebsiella (Duguid, 1959). Fimbriae have been demonstrated in many of the enterobacteriaceae, and more recent studies have shown that other organisms also possess fimbriae, for example, Pseudomonas (Fuerst and Hayward, 1969); Vibrio (Tweedy, Park, and Hodgkiss, 1968); Herella (Swanson and Goldschneider, 1969) and Neisseria species (Wistreich and Baker, 1971; Jephcott, Reyn, and Birch-Andersen, 1971; Swanson, Kraus, and Gotschlich, 1971). Their occurrence is not limited to Gram-negative organisms, since they have been reported in various strains of streptococci (Swanson and McCarty, 1969) and Corynebacterium renale (Yanagawa and Otsuki, 1970). Fimbriae are usually thinner than flagella and may differ from them in detailed fine structure (Duguid and others, 1955; Brinton, 1967). Duguid (1959) suggested, on the basis of electron micrographs, that there may be two types of fimbriae, one with a diameter of 100nm. and the other 70nm.; he suggested that such a difference in apparent sizes might be a

Reverse passive haemagglutination test for the rapid identification of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and detection of penicillinase production.

In a comparison of the reverse passive haemagglutination test (RPHA) with the direct immunofluorescent and rapid carbohydrate utilisation tests for the identification of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated from clinical specimens, 315 isolates of oxidase-positive Gram-negative diplococci were tested as pure 24-hour-old subcultures and samples from 108 similar organisms were taken directly from prima...

A study on the frequency of vaginal species of Mycoplasma genitalium, Gardnerella vaginalis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae among pregnant women by PCR technique

Bacterial vaginosis or non-specific vaginitis describes the disease caused by a change in the normal Flora of the vagina, which leads to the elimination of Lactobacilli, generating hydrogen peroxide and excess growth of bacteria, particularly anaerobic bacteria. This disease is the most prevalent infection of the female genital tract, and the rate of frequency of anaerobic bacteria, specificall...

Morphogenetic expression of Bacteroides nodosus fimbriae in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Type 4 fimbriae are found in a range of pathogenic bacteria, including Bacteroides nodosus, Moraxella bovis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The structural subunits of these fimbriae all contain a highly conserved hydrophobic amino-terminal sequence preceding a variable hydrophilic carboxy-terminal region. We show here that recombinant P. aeruginosa cells containing the B. no...

Modified erythrocytes in indirect haemagglutination with Neisseria gonorrhoeae antigen.

Antigen prepared from gonococci by extraction with alkali has the ability to sensitize erythrocytes for agglutination or indirect haemolysis by corresponding antisera (Chanarin, 1954; Maeland, 1966; Thomas and Mennie, 1950). These indirect techniques have been used for the study of endotoxin preparations from gonococci. Endotoxins, however, require treatment with alkali before sensitization, ex...

Mercaptoethanol-resistant human serum antibodies reacting with endotoxin from Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Sera from fifty patients with gonorrhoea, thirty with non-specific urethritis, and eighty blood donors were treated with mercaptoethanol (ME) and examined by the indirect haemagglutination test for antibodies against endotoxin from gonococci. Erythrocytes sensitized with determinant a of endotoxin from Strains 8551, V, and VII, or determinant b from Strain V were used. The percentage of sera ac...
